We understand that you are at our office to be evaluated for a heart condition; however we feel there are some general health principles that apply to everyone who desires a healthy and productive life free from chronic illness. Heart disease is a chronic illness.

1. No tobacco products. Cigarettes, Cigars, chewing tobacco and pipes.
2. Alcohol. This should be limited to a glass of red wine per day. If you do not drink alcohol then do not start for health reasons. All other forms of alcohol should be avoided.
3. Maintain a reasonable weight. Morbid obesity (BMI greater than 30) is associated with many chronic illnesses. It would be our recommendation to maintain your BMI in the 22-28 range. We will calculate your BMI on your visit.
4. Exercise on a regular basis. Exercise should include elements that improve heart and lung (cardio) fitness, musculoskeletal /core strength and flexibility. Cardio fitness is any activity that involves moving and breathing to get your heart and lungs working. Walking is the easiest and a brisk walk for 30- 45 minutes 3-4 times a week is a good start. Strength exercises in form of resistance with light weights, resistance bands and Pilates. Flexibility with Tai Chi, and yoga etc.
5. Adequate Nutrition. Your food should supply the right amount of energy with the right fats, carbohydrates and protein along with essential nutrients. Essential nutrients are elements in your food intake that are necessary for normal cellular body function. These need to be eaten as the body cannot make them. It includes certain fatty acids, vitamins, and a group of compounds (such as flavonoids, photo nutrients) that ensure normal cellular function.
   In general this would be a low fat diet, rich in fruits and vegetables with low consumption of meat and dairy products (beef, pork, chicken, cheese, milk and cream). Oily fish (salmon etc) at least two to three times a week. The avoidance of any food that has trans -fats or partial hydrogenated oils (this means virtually all cookies, cakes, candies and a lot of fast food). Rich in fiber and a high glycemic load. We also favor organic produce as it is free of pesticides and chemicals.
6. Mind /Body issues. It has become increasingly clear that your state of mind has a bearing on your outcome from disease. A feeling of fear, hopelessness, chronic anxiety, depression, past traumas, current relationship issues and other unresolved problems should be dealt with. Family, friends and professional help can be enlisted.
